Walking the Work-Family Tightrope

Your life is not easy work out how you planned. Nothing is more simple. In the morning you will find it difficult to know from the bed that you get already behind schedule. In the evening you get home from work worn out physically and emotionally, with little energy left over for your family.

The seven dwarfs probably said it best: "Go Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's Off to Work we do." Americans log more hours on the job than any other comparable country on the planet, with the averageWorkers toiling 44 hours per week.

A study in 1998 by the Family and Work Institute in New York found that nearly 85 percent of today's workforce from day to day has family commitments, and more than three quarters of all married employees have partners that work well.

Working parents are under pressure to divide their loyalties between success at work and the care of their children at home. And their children to adapt this balancing act.

On the whole, parentsLabour still has a lot more hours to even come close to approaching the standard of living they enjoyed just a few decades to come. In families where parents work different shifts, the children can never be their mother and father together.
